News Ticker

BluTuesday – August 15, 2017

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from last minute back-to-school prep to bring you the latest releases to home media for August 15, 2017. In this week’s episode, we discuss bad scientists, a different type of rom-com, time travelers, a different type of fairy tale, the reimagining of a classic, and James Spader. We’ve got a lot to get to, so let’s dive in.

Alien: Covenant (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 71%
Metascore: 65

When the crew of the colony ship Covenant discover an uncharted paradise, they think they’ve hit the jackpot. But, underneath that paradise, evil stirs, and the fight for survival begins. This film, which stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and Billy Crudup, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD + Digital Copy version. I’ve never seen an Alien film, and I don’t plan on starting today. I’ve heard mixed reviews about this film, but the snippets I’ve seen indicate that they’ve learned nothing from the last expedition. Aliens fans, enjoy.

How to Be a Latin Lover (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 38%
Metascore: 54

Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) is your stereotypical Latin lover; marrying older women for their money, and living the plush lifestyle of a live-in sidepiece. But, when he’s unceremoniously dumped by the older woman he married for a younger man, he moves in with his estranged sister Sara (Salma Hayek) and her 10 year old son Hug0 (Raphael Alejandro). Wanting nothing more than to return to the lap of luxury, Maximo uses Hugo to meet a rich widow, but learns more about himself in the process. This film, which also stars Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, and Raquel Welch, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. I generally don’t like comedies, but this one seems almost quaint. Plus, it’s a different type of comedy than the one we’re used to suffering through. So, check it out.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Second Season

The crew of the Waverider returns to traipse through time and do their level of fixing things. Led by Captain Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), the crew of Legends – Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh), Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), and newcomers Nate Heywood (Nick Zano) and Amaya Jiwe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), have to protect the legendary Spear of Destiny from the villainous Legion of Doom – Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller), and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman). This series, which also stars Amy Pemberton, Christina Brucato, and Arthur Darvill, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a four disc DVD version. Whereas the first season was hit or miss for a lot of people, the second season knocked it out of the park. It was fun and witty, and it refused to take itself seriously, even when the stakes were high. I highly recommend this.

Once Upon a Time: The Complete Sixth Season

Storybooke is cursed. After Regina (Lana Parrilla) crushed her Dark Half’s heart, the town began to settle back into peace and tranquility. However, when the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) returns, all hell breaks loose. Meanwhile, Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) is trying everything to win back Belle (Emilie de Ravin) before their child is born, Snow (Ginnifer Godwin) and David (Josh Dallas) face a new threat to their happiness, and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) has to fight for her very survival if she is to find her happily ever after with Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue). This series, which also stars Jared S. Gilmore, Raphael Sbarge, and Jamie Dornan, is available in a five disc Blu-ray version and a five disc DVD version. Come for the magic and intrigue, stay to say farewell to Jennifer Morrison. This is an interesting series; give it a watch.

Riverdale: The Complete First Season
Metascore: 68

Inspired by the Archie Comics characters, Riverdale gives you a different look at the idyllic and eponymous town. When high school golden boy Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines), everyone finds themselves a suspect. Meanwhile, all-American teen Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) decides he wants to pursue a career in music, but can’t do that without repairing his fractured friendship with Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) starting her own group. Also, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and new student Veronica Lodge (Camilla Mendes) are both vying for Archie’s feelings. This series, which also stars Madelaine Petsch, Mädchen Amick, and Luke Perry, is available in a three disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This…this is very intriguing. If you missed watching it live last season *raises hand*, this is the perfect opportunity to check it out.

The Blacklist: The Complete Fourth Season

In the fourth season of the NBC drama, Liz (Megan Boone) is trying to find out more about her lost childhood, but every day she fails to get answers means her family is in more danger. Meanwhile, “Red” Reddington (James Spader) has a specific moral code screaming for justice, all the while fighting against a new group of blacklisters. This series, which also stars Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix, and Amir Arison, is available in a five disc Blu-ray version and a five disc DVD version. This is all very confusing…I mean, if you’ve seen it this far, keep going. Otherwise…well…I don’t know. I got nothin’.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to discuss? Have something better to say about the fourth season of The Blacklist? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
