BluTuesday – June 2, 2015

What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from celebrating the return of my beloved UAB Blazers football, rifling, and bowling teams to bring you the latest releases to home media for June 2, 2015. In this week’s episode, we discuss Will Smith, the dying gasp of the Wachowski Siblings, your kid’s favorite cartoon, teen drama, gritty sci-fi, and the end of a fan favorite. All tucked in? Let’s get started.

Focus (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 56%

After the disaster that was After Earth, Will Smith returns to the role that defines him best: the cocky, suave, man of intrigue. Here, he plays a con man named Nicky Spurgeon who takes on an apprentice named Jess Barrett (Margot Robie). Together, they begin to work the biggest con of their careers: running a game on billionaire Rafael Garriga (Rodrigo Santoro). This film, which also stars B.D. Wong, Gerald McRaney, and Robert Taylor, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This movie is fun, it’s sexy, and it’s certainly worth your time.

Jupiter Ascending (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 25%

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) dreams of achieving great things. Instead, she spends her time cleaning toilets. However, she runs into Caine Wise, a genetically enhanced soldier, she realizes that she is destined for much more. This film, which also stars Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, and Tuppence Middleton, is available in a three disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. I was always told that if I didn’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water (PG)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 78%

When the dreaded pirate Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas) steals the recipe for the world famous Krabby Patties, SpongeBob Squarepants (Tom Kenney) must team up with former rival Plankton to save the day. This film, which also stars Bill Fagerbakke, Rob Paulson, and Clancy Brown, is available in a three disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy version, and a single disc DVD version. This is one trippy film, and it’s destined to be a classic for children and stoners alike.

Pretty Little Liars: The Complete Fifth Season

The PLLs are still reeling over the events of Season Four. Whereas Aria, Emily, and Spencer are happy to see both Alison and Ezra are still alive, they still are no closer to finding out who the mysterious “A” is. On top of that, two more bodies are discovered, and Senior year promises to be the most daunting year yet. This series, which stars Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Sasha Pieterse, is available in a five disc DVD version. This show has been a spectacular success for ABC Family and has a fiercely loyal fanbase. I expect this to fly off the shelves so their fans can relive the drama of this past season.

Falling Skies: The Complete Fourth Season

The worst has happened: aliens have successfully taken over the Earth. Now, it’s up to Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) and his ragtag band of rebels to take the fight to the Espheni race and rebuild humanity. This series, which also stars Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, and Will Patton, is available in both a two disc Blu-ray + Digital Copy version and a three disc DVD version. This show has been a cult favorite from day one, and it is certainly worth watching if you’re a hard sci-fi fan.

Justified: The Final Season

In the final season of this beloved series, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and criminal mastermind Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) is coming to a head. On top of that, both men have to deal with a new drug lord played by Sam Elliott who wants to set up his own pot empire in town. This series, which also stars Nick Searcy and Joelle Carter, is available in both a three disc Blu-ray version and a three disc DVD version. This show has been a masterpiece since day one, and it’s fun to watch a show go out when it’s supposed to. This set gets my pick of the week, hands down.
