News Ticker

BluTuesday – May 20, 2014

Konnichiwa, ProFans! Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from watching Sailor Moon to bring you the latest in home media releases for May 20, 2014. In this week’s episode, we talk about WWII soldiers fighting the good fight, sexy vampires, volcanoes, Kevin Hart, mysterious things that we’re not supposed to know about, and rogue spies. Ready to dive in? Well, let’s go!

The Monuments Men (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 32%

Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett, this movie tells the true story of a platoon of World War II soldiers who are tasked to save valuable pieces of art from being destroyed by Nazi Germany and return the pieces to their rightful owners. This movie comes in both a two-disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD version. The Clooney-directed film was being looked at as an Oceans Eleven-style romp in WWII, but it turned out to be anything but that. The story they’re trying to tell is an important one, but it seemed to fall asleep at the wheel. Still, it’s worth watching at least once for the striking visuals alone.

The Monuments Men

Vampire Academy (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 10%

Vampire Academy – based on the YA novel of the same name – tells the story of a half-vampire and a peaceful vampire as they race to uncover a mysterious secret at at St. Vladimir’s Academy. This movie, which stars Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, and Danila Kozlovsky, is available in both a single-disc Bluray + Digital Copy version and a single-disc DVD version. I’m sure the novel this movie is based on is terrific; it almost has to be in order to get a film adaptation. Either that, or some producer’s daughter slipped it in her father’s stack of papers one day. There is no way in good conscience I can recommend anyone not a fan of the books to watch this.

Vampire Academy

Pompeii (PG-13)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 28%

Jon Snow – I’m sorry – Kit Harrington stars alongside Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica Lucas, Jared Harris, and Jack Bauer – damn it! – Keifer Sutherland in a sword and sandal epic straight out of a community theater’s production of Gladiator mixed in with the Doctor Who Series Four episode “The Fires of Pompeii.” No, I’m not joking. Yes, I’m completely serious. The only thing it’s missing is a giant monster inside of the volcano. This movie comes in a two-disc 3D Bluray/Bluray version, a single-disc Bluray version, and a single-disc DVD version. If you just like Kit Harrington that much, then go for broke with this one. Otherwise, watch the things that inspired it; they’re much better.

Pompeii - 3D

About Last Night (R)
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 69%

Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, and Joy Bryant, star in a remake of the 1986 classic romcom of the same name. Unlucky in love Danny (Ealy) gets hooked up with the equally unlucky Debbie (Bryant) by their respective roommates Bernie (Hart) and Joan (Hall). Suspend disbelief long enough to believe that both Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant would EVER be unlucky in ANYTHING, and you have a good movie. This movie comes in both a single-disc Bluray version and a single-disc DVD version. This is a good movie for couples to watch and cuddle to. Pick it up and enjoy it with the one you love.

About Last Night

Warehouse 13: The Final Season

This show – which came to a satisfying end with this season – stars Joanne Kelly and Eddie McClintock as Secret Service agents who are assigned to the eponymous warehouse which houses supernatural artifacts in South Dakota. As they begin tracking down mysterious artifacts and finding new ones, they start to look at this as less of a punishment and more of a very important job that they were entrusted to do. This show is available in a two-disc DVD version, and it is certainly worth your time.

Warehouse 13 Season Five

Nikita: The Complete Fourth and Final Season

Nikita stars Maggie Q as the eponymous spy/assassin in her never-ending quest to destroy the secret government agency known simply as “Division”. Also starring Shane West and Lyndsy Fonseca, this was a show I couldn’t miss initially; the only reason I did was I was just unable to keep up. But, I will be finding my way back to watching the show again, and this collection – available in both a single-disc Bluray version and a single-disc DVD version – will help. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s action packed, and it’s my pick of the week.

Nikita Season Four

Well, that’s all I got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I miss something you wanted to talk about? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.

Until next time…
