News Ticker

BluTuesday – November 4, 2014

Howdy, ProFans! Joseph here, and I’m taking a break from stealing my daughter’s Halloween candy (What? She’s three! She’s not gonna eat it all!) to bring you the latest in home media for November 4, 2014. In this week’s episode, we discuss Angelia Jolie, talking avionics, and this generation’s news drama. All ready to go? Let’s go.

Maleficent (2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 49%

Fairy tales are a simple telling of good versus evil, and good always prevails. But, have you ever wondered what made the evil person evil? That’s what is being discussed in this movie. Angelina Jolie stars as the titular character in this entertaining prequel. After she is wronged by the man she loves, Maleficent places a curse on his newborn daughter, Princess Aurora. Over time, she begins to grow fond of the girl, and realizes that there is more to her than meets the eye. This film – which also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, and the evil bi – I mean, Imelda Staunton – is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a very pretty movie that is well acted and entertaining, and I recommend giving it a glance. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Planes Fire and Rescue (1-Disc DVD)

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 44%

Dane Cook returns in this sequel to the surprising smash hit Planes. In this film, Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook) comes to the realization that he will never race again. So, he opts to become an aerial firefighter instead, and find out what it’s like to become a hero along the way. This film – which also features the voices of Ed Harris, Julie Bowen, and Curtis Armstrong, is available in both a two disc Bluray/DVD + Digital Copy version and a single disc DVD version. This is a cute movie that’s actually more fun than you’d think, and it’s at least worth a bit of your time.

The Newsroom: Season 2

From the brilliant mind of Aaron Sorkin comes the second season of this acclaimed HBO drama. Set five days before the 2012 election, the staff of the Atlantis Cable Network has its work cut out for it. On top of the normal TV drama, the staff has to deal with a wrongful-termination lawsuit brought forth by one of their former colleagues. This series – which stars Jeff Bridges, Olivia Munn, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Olivia Munn, and Sam Waterston – is available in a three disc Bluray set. This is smart TV for a smart audience, and it is my pick of the week.
