Mildred Louis, based out of Boston, MA, studied animation at Sheridan College in Canada. She is the author and artist behind Agents of the Realm, an original graphic novel Louis funded through Kickstarter. The graphic novel, which originated as a webcomic, follows five college women who discover their magical powers and are chosen to protect our world. It’s a coming-of-age story with a magic twist, featuring women of color characters. After raising $34K via Kickstarter, Louis has self-published a full volume of Agents of the Realm. The soft cover volume is beautifully rendered and detailed. You can find Agents of the Realm and her other work at artofmlouis.com.
If you read Marvel’s Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat! then you already know the work of Canadian comic creator Kate Leth. She also writes an original series for Dark Horse comics called Spell on Wheels. Drawn by Megan Levens, Spell on Wheels is like Charmed meets Thelma & Louise. It follows three young witches, psychic, girly-girl, Claire; badass, tattoo artist Jo Nguyen; and quiet, spell-caster, Andy. The three set out on a road trip to retrieve something that was stolen from them. Leth has also written graphic novels of Fraggle Rock, Edward Scissorhands, and Adventure Time.
