Previously on Lucifer, ‘Wingman’
Jealousy with a Halo
Lucifer kicks off this week with a re-birthday party. He’s torched his wings and he feels reborn. But he’s still petty as hell since he has everyone wearing wings to his celebratory shindig. (I believe there’s probably a saying about laughing in the face of God but I’m too lazy to look it up) Either way, Luci is back to his old self and he wants to go back partying and helping Chloe fight crime, but Chloe and Dan are working together to find the crooked cop and Luci feels like the outsider in their crime fighting game.
This is further complicated by the fact that Lucifer is having a lot of pesky feelings and most of them are jealousy. He talks to his therapist about them and decides that instead of helping him embrace what he’s feeling, Dr. Martin should “fix” Chloe’s taste in men instead. Naturally, the case of the week involves a dead therapist, who specializes in “cheating therapy” so Dr. Martin’s expertise is needed.
Angel On Your Shoulder, Devil at Your Back
Lucifer, Chloe, and Dr. Martin run around town trying to find out who killed the therapist, which takes them down some pretty funny roads (at one point horse poop comes into play). The whole time Lucifer tries, with no subtlety, to get the doctor to treat Chloe. Unfortunately for him, the two women have a growing respect for each other and both of them take him to task on his jealousy.
Here’s where the show gets a little mired down. They haven’t decided yet if they really want to pursue a romance between Lucifer and Chloe. Although Luci repeatedly hints at sex and Chloe seems impervious to his charms, there are moments of true connection between them. The show itself hasn’t decided if it wants to follow through on that, though. So we spend half of this episode with Lucifer being overtly jealous of Dan, but then he comes to the realization that he’s not actually jealous and nothing is explicitly resolved or explained.
Despite that, we do get a major reveal about the dirty cop. Malcolm, the cop who woke up from the coma last week, pays Chloe a visit that could be seen as a threat or a warning. Either way, she figures out that the only other person who should have known where Malcolm was that evening was his partner. To which I said, “Aha! I knew it!” But the show decides to throw us a curveball when Malcolm’s partner turns up dead. Chloe and Dan bond and start to rekindle their romance over this revelation, but it’s short-lived when Dan goes to meet Malcolm and we learn that Dan was the shooter all along. Good one, show. You got me.
Also Lucifer realizes Dr. Canaan, who works down the hall from Dr. Martin, is Amenadiel and it doesn’t take him long to work out that Maze told him the name of Luci’s therapist. So both Lucifer and Chloe are dealing with traitors.
The Devil is Laughing (Funniest Lines)
Lucifer was on fire tonight (all puns always intended)
“Let’s find Maze … She loves a salty after taste.”
“I have layers. I’m like an onion … an irresistible one”
The past few weeks have been a bit serious with the lost wings storyline but this week was lighter. It was helped by the guest stars, Al Madrigal (The Daily Show) and Jim Rash (Community), who are also comedians even though they weren’t playing comedic roles. The addition of Kevin Rankin as Malcolm is also really good. Since Amenadiel has been guarding hell and Malcolm “died” I’m wondering if that’s even Malcolm who returned to the land of the living. The one person I’m really missing is Trixie. I love her interactions with Lucifer and she’s been absent for a few weeks now.
