Several members of the Project Fandom team have gotten reacquainted with comic books and graphic novels this year. Here are some of our favorites. All are worth a subscription if you’re shopping for a comic book lover this holiday season.
Rat Queens – Volume 1
This is a great new(ish) fantasy series involving a mixed group of very kickass mercenary women. Their mouths are filthy and they love a good bar brawl. The writing is fantastic and so is the art work. – ProFan Patti
Southern Bastards – Vol. 1: Here Was a Man
From the creative team of Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, Southern Bastards’ first volume–stretching the series’ opening four issues–introduces an old and grizzled Earl Tubb who is reluctantly tasked with returning to his hometown of Craw County, Alabama. This first arc spends the bulk of its time fleshing out Earl and deftly populating this small town with exactly the kind of smalltown environment anyone with a birthplace you’re ashamed to admit you used to love being from knows all too well. Earl is a fairly simple man, and Southern Bastards’ first arc tells his fairly simple story; the precision with which the story is told, however is terrific, with the arc’s finale being one of the best-written comic issues I’ve ever read. Southern Bastards Vol. 1: Here Was a Man is available in trade paperback from Amazon or at your local comic book shop. – ProFan John
There’s a reason Ms. Marvel is Marvel’s best selling digital comic book this year: It’s amazing. Kamala Khan is brilliant, funny, and compassionate. She’s also an unapologetic fangirl so she holds a special place in my heart. The fact that this kickass superhero is also a Muslim girl from Jersey is just icing.
This would be the perfect gift for the young comic book lover in your life – especially young girls. Check out my reviews of the first 9 issues here. – ProFan Nina
Titan Comics’ New Adventures with Doctor Who series
Earlier this year, Titan Comics began three new Doctor Who comic book series chronicling the adventures of the 10th, 11th, and 12th Doctors. If you’re a fan of the show (or know someone who is), these books are a must-have. So far, the storylines really capture the essence of each Doctor, the artwork is gorgeous, and the two new companions (for 10th and 11th) are definitely worthy to hold the Doctor’s hand and run.
It’s hard to say which series is best, but the latest issue for the 10th Doctor was one of the best comic books I’ve ever read. – ProFan Nina
