Yet Another Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Trailer

The last few days have been very Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. heavy; today, we got the third in a series of new trailers for the upcoming ABC show, but this one is way longer.

Agents of SHIELD

This trailer, thankfully, is nearly three minutes long; that means we get all kinds of new information. Most of it is exposition, explaining exactly how things are going to work, how the character dynamics are set up, and what exactly everyone is going to be doing on the show. That means there’s a lot of talking, which is fine because a large percentage of it comes from Agent Phil Coulson, who is fantastic (due in large part to how well Clark Gregg plays him).

We also get a little more of a look at J. August Richards’ mystery character, which has been the hot topic all week. Here, he’s described by Coulson as “a superhero”. Some still think that superhero is Luke Cage, some think it may be Rage, and neither of those are right (for what it’s worth, I thought he might be Nick Fury Jr, but that’s looking less likely, too). The prevailing opinion is now the idea that he is probably a character which was created specifically for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I’m actually happier if that turns out to be the case.

Mainly, what we glean from this extended trailer for the series is that, so far, it would seem to have adequately translated the banter and engaging dialogue from The Avengers to television—we’ll have to wait and see if that lasts beyond the premiere, however. Obviously, the series will not have the budget to have Avengers-like special effects in every episode, so the series is going to have to rely heavily on character interaction and chemistry; that’s why it’s great to see this trailer demonstrate how well the actors seem to bounce off of one another. It does feel a bit like previous Joss Whedon character-driven fare, so that’s great, if you’re a fan of that.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be airing Tuesdays at 8pm on ABC, starting this Fall. We can’t wait to see how well it does, since it will likely be going up against CBS’ NCIS. I’m actually surprised some have worried this time slot will spell disaster for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; there’s no way this doesn’t become an immediate success, especially since you know there will be some interesting cameos coming up.

John is currently untitled. This complete lack of definition would drive most into abject bitterness and utter despair, but not someone of John’s virility. No, John is the picture of mental stability and emotional platitude.
